Can Influence Politics: An Interview with Grigory
Yavlinsky
Grigory Yavlinsky is the head of the
“Yabloko” party in Russia -- a party that has been
described as decidedly liberal in its outlook. Yavlinsky
is a former economist, and was a candidate for the
Russian presidency in 1996, an election in which he
finished with less than 10% . He is expected to be
a key player --whether as a candidate or not -- in
Russia’s 2000 elections.
Yavlinsky was born in the Ukrainian
city of Lvov in 1952. He became deputy director of
the Council of Ministers of the Russian Federation
-- when it was still part of the USSR -- in 1991.
Last week he agreed to this interview with a member
of the IntellectualCapital.ru
staff. Here is a translated, and edited, version of
the transcripts.

Urges Ustinov to End Gitin Inquiry
The Moscow Times, July 26, 2000
The State Duma has sent an inquiry to
Prosecutor General Vladimir Ustinov calling for an
end to the criminal investigation against former legislator
Viktor Gitin.
Gitin, the former deputy head of the Duma’s budget
committee and a member of the Yabloko faction, was
arrested in March on charges of getting kickbacks
from a Krasnoyarsk bank for arranging transfers of
federal funds through its accounts during his term
in parliament.

since March 2000 for "accepting a large bribe".

Duma announced that it had started to collect signatures
to support the introduction of an amendment to the
Constitution of the RF on direct elections to Federation

Grigory Yavlinsky said that his party
Yabloko is "ready to provide a credit of trust to
the present President".
However, the congress where he made this
statement was devoted to another matter. Grigory Alexeevich,
using medical jargon, has decided to subject Yabloko
to intensive therapy: the whole party should be revived
and skilfully added to the party system built by the
Kremlin.
