Liberal International adopted YABLOKO’s resolution on combating rise of extremism and xenophobia among youth

The 58th congress of Liberal International which took place in Abidjan, Cote-d’Ivoire, on October 17-21, adopted YABLOKO’s resolution "Combating Rise of Extremism Among Youth". The resolution was submitted to the congress by the YABLOKO party, LI full member.

The resolution expresses deep concern of a global rise of extremism and xenophobia among youth stating that liberals must tackle these challenges “basing on liberal values of human rights, individual freedoms, rule of law, respect for the individual, tolerance and civil and moral responsibility of each person”.

Form now on the resolution prepared by YABLOKO Bureau members Ivan Bolshakov and Alexander Gnezdilov and Dmitry Ilyushin, Federal Council member, will become a guidance for the liberal parties all over the world.
Earlier the resolution had been approved by a joint YABLOKO-ELDR conference, which took place in Moscow on April 21, 2012.

YABLOKO paid tribute to the memory of Moscow theatre hostages

YABLOKO leader Sergei Mitrokhin and Galina Mikhalyova, Bureau member, paid tribute to the memory of hostages of a Moscow theatre who came to watch the Nord-Ost musical (in Dubrovka district, Moscow). They laid flowers to the memorial plaque with the names of the victims set by the Theatre Center.

Ten years ago, on October 26, 2002, security forces stormed into the building where terrorists held the actors and the audience of the Nord–Ost musical. According to the official data, 130 hostages were killed.

For and on behalf of the YABLOKO party I am conveying condolences to the relatives and next of kin of Valiulla Yakupov, head of Educational Department of Spiritual Directorate of the Muslims of Tatarstan, who was murdered by criminals. I am also conveying condolences to residents of Tatarstan and the entire Muslim community of our country. I wish speedy recovery to Ildus Faizov, Mufti of the Republic of Tatarstan, who was injured during explosion of his car.

We strongly condemn this crime and demand from the President of the Russian Federation to take the investigation of the attack under his personal control.

We hope that the criminals will not escape punishment...

Condolences on the act of terror in Makhachkala, Dagestan

The Russian United Democratic Party YABLOKO expresses condolences to relatives of the victims of a double bombing in Makhachkala, Dagestan. We are wishing all the injured a speedy recovery.

Despite repeated assurances by the Russian leadership that terrorism has been defeated in Russia, the Caucasus and the armed gangs are not eliminated and terrorist attacks do not stop.

We demand an immediate investigation into this crime and punishment of all guilty in this in this crime in accordance with the law.

We demand that President-elect Vladimir Putin should take investigation of this act of terror under his personal control...

Youth Extremism and Xenophobia discussed at Moscow Conference

The noticeable rise of extremism and xenophobia among youth across Europe brought prominent liberals to discuss in Moscow, Russia liberal agenda for addressing this problem. Prominent speakers included Sergei Mitrokhin and Grigory Yavlinsky, the leader and the presidential candidate of Yabloko (LI Full member), Trine Skei Grande MP, leader of Venstre, Norway (LI Full member), Astrid Thors MP of SFP, Finland (LI Full member) and Marc Guerrero, Vice President of ELDR (LI cooperating organisation), Angelika Mlinar, leader of Liberales Forum, Austria and Kerstin Lundgren MP of Center Party, Sweden (LI Full member). In the welcome speech LI Secretary General Emil Kirjas pledged for “more opportunities for the young people to participate in decision making, starting from micro level, including in families and the local communities. That responsibility must be based on freedom of expression and dialogue, discussion, debate.” LI Treasurer Robert W. Browne spoke on the growth of xenophobia, street protests and violence in Europe, giving account of the 2011 London riots. A resolution was adopted that is likely to be further discussed at the upcoming LI Congress in Abidjan.

Leader of the YABLOKO party Sergei Mitrokhin demands from the Investigative Committee to file a criminal case against Dagir Khasavov, lawyer promising "to flood the city [Moscow] with blood" in the REN TV channel, "unless sharia courts are created in the capital [of Russia]”.

"Muslims do not want to get involved into the judicial system. You think that we are coming here to Russia as to some strange place. And we believe that we are at home. Maybe you are foreigners here, but we are at home. And we will establish the rules that suit us, whether you like it or not. Any attempt to stop this will lead to bloodshed. The second dead lake will be here. We will flood the city with blood," announced the lawyer and Assistant to Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Social Policy and Healthcare in the federal television channel. From 19 to 22 April, ELDR Vice President Marc Guerrero was on tour in Ukraine and Russia to support the activities of the liberal family.

In Kiev, an international ELDR conference with the local liberal partners from Ukraine, the Future and the European Youth of Ukraine, was held which focussed on free market and liberal policies as the best tools for a democratic and prosperous society. At the event, the Institute of Democracy and Liberalism (IdeaL) was launched.

In Moscow, Marc Guerrero and ELDR Vice President Astrid Thors MP were present at the conference "Youth under threat of Extremism and Xenophobia. A liberal response" organised by ELDR member YABLOKO.

...We think that such liberal response should include the following:

- steady rejection by the society of all forms of xenophobia and extremism and personality cult, as well as revival of nazism, Stalinism and fascism; abolishment of the cult of superiority and crude force, as well as manipulations with public opinion by means of pseudo historical myths and conspiracy theories;

- broadening of possibilities for engaging people in social and political life, provision of free and fair elections and independence of the judiciary; development of institutes of democracy and civil society which allow each citizen to participate in the social and political life and feel that his or her beliefs, points of view and interests influence government’s politics;

- protection of human dignity protection, person immunity and freedom of individual choice; strengthening of the secular state principles and freedom of conscience and rejection of all forms of anti-Semitism;

- conducting policies stimulating maximum integration and socialisation of people into economic, political and cultural life of Europe; gradual liquidation of barriers either in the society or between the states. Creation of a pan-European visa-free area...

Neo-Nazis attacked YABLOKO’s activist

In the evening April 16 neo-Nazis attacked Anatoly Rabinovich, YABLOKO’s Bureau member and President of the Inter-Regional Union of those who was brought up in orphanages.

Rabinovich was attacked when he was going back home from the Moscow Conference of YABLOKO. Coming out of the Barrikadnaya metro station and walking to Sadovaya-Kudrinskaya street he walked away from a group of not sober young men. Several seconds later one of the men hit Rabinovish from behind. Rabinovich tried to return to the metro station hoping to get help from police. However, neo-Nazis were chasing him striking blows...

The action was organised by the YABLOKO party in protest against multiethnic clashes in Moscow. The participants of the actions held placards “Let’s Preserve Peace between Nations!”, “Russia is a Homeland for 182 Ethnic Groups!”, “Let’s Stop Violence!”, “Feebleness of the Government [in opposing ethnic hatred] Leads to Public Violence!”, “Feud between Nations Leads to Russia’s Collapse!” The activists were joined by passer-bys. Despite of their true ethnic background, the activists held signs with the names of the Northern Caucasus nationalities and ethnic groups: “I am an Ossetian”, “I am a Darginian”, “I am a Lezginian”, etc. Police attempted to stop the action...

An explanation lies either in extremely low professionalism of the police heads or their sympathy for the nationalists and their slogans, or even in both the reasons. If the authorities do not file criminal cases on "inciting of ethnic hatred" and "organisation of mass disorders", then there are grounds to speak about the collusion of the authorities and the nationalists. The authorities often see the nationalists as their allies. We are confident that among those who were engaged in the clashes in the center of Moscow there were representatives of nationalistically minded groups of football fans who attacked the defenders of Khimki forest. We know about the connection between these groups with pro-Kremlin youth movements, their creators and tutors...

YABLOKO leaves the rally protesting against participation of nationalists

The YABLOKO party left the rally against arbitrary rule during trails against journalists and human rights activists protesting against participation in the rally of the ultra-right Russkiy Obraz (The Russian Image) organisation that came to the rally bearing their flags. YABLOKO’s leader Sergei Mitrokhin proposed to the representative of nationalists a compromise – to participate in the rally without their nationalistic symbols but the latter refused. After this YABLOKO including activists from the Tula branch of YABLOKO, the Moscow YABLOKO and Sergei Mitrokhin, left the Pushkin Square.

The activists of the Tula branch of YABLOKO specially came to Moscow so that to tell about criminal persecutions against Vladimir Timakov, deputy of the Tula Regional Duma (regional parliament) from the YABLOKO faction , for alleged “libel” against Governor of the Tula Region Vuacheslav Dudka. In accordance with Article 129 of the Criminal Code Timakov faces three years of imprisonment for his criticism of the Governor...

Youth YABLOKO is now picketing Public Prosecutor General's office in Moscow (at the address Bolshaya Dmitrovka, 15a) demanding to release 26 year-old Vladimir Volkov, activist of the Penza branch of the party, detained for 48 hours on suspicion of an arson of United Russia’s office in Penza.

Youth YABLOKO activists hold a placard “Free activist of the Penza branch of YABLOKO Vladimir Volkov”. The police have been checking the activists’ documents, however, have not obstructed the picket yet.

Activist of the Youth YABLOKO Vladimir Volkov was detained for 48 hours of arson of the United Russia office in Penza. Earlier his flat had been searched.

Today on November 17, 2009, at 9.00 a.m. several persons who told that they were interior officers came to Volkov’s flat where he lives with his parents. They asked Volkov to come with them, explaining that his lawyer could come to the interior department where they all would “talk”.

However, until 2 p.m. neither his parents, nor the lawyer, nor even investigator Ye.Pluzhnikova had no information where Volkov was.

The YABLOKO party expresses its categorical protest in connection with provocations and acts of pressure and mobbing of the party branches in a number of regions.

On November 8, 2009, there was a fire in the regional branch of the United Russia party. According to preliminary information of the interior, unknown persons threw flame fluid in the window.

There events became a motive to political mobbing of activists from oppositional parties and movements by the United Russia at participation of the interior.

At night on the 8th of October unlawful searches in the homes of YABLOKO members and allies took place. Seven activists were victims of lawlessness. Notebooks, party and publicistic materials, other things having no relation to the arson were confiscated.

The YABLOKO party considers statements of the United Russia leaders and actions of the interior, as well as their accusations in the address of opposition parties in extremism as persecution of the dissenting and intimidation of politically active citizens.

Aggressive nationalism endangers Russia

The 4th of November is officially announced the Day of National Unity in Russia. However, it is this day when the streets of Russian cities turn into arena for skin-heads, Nazis and racists provoking ethnic hatred. “Russian Marches” conducted on permission of local authorities and multiple unsanctioned nationalists’ actions will take place in 16 Russian cities.

According to the analytical centre SOVA, 50 people died and 280 people were wounded due to xenophobia since January 2009.

The YABLOKO party states that provoking of ethnic hatred, as well as assistance in the organisation of nationalists’ actions, is prone of very serious consequences, including shedding of blood and disintegration of the country.

The Sixth Anti-Hatred March will take place in St.Petersburg on October 31. Its route lies from Sportivnaya metro station to the Sakharov Square.

Initially the March was planned as tribute to academic and human rights activist Nikolai Giryenko shot by right-wing nationalists on June 19, 2004. Gradually the Anti-Hatred March has been turning into the solidarity day for all people resisting social order based on fear and hatred. Inequality of the rights and discrimination as of social, cultural, national, ethnic, race, religious, gender factors or sexual orientation should be eliminated as contradicting the interests of building a welfare state in the multicultural, multinational and multiconfessional Russia.

Top Russian judge killed in Moscow

A senior Russian judge who presided over the high-profile trial of a gang of racist killers was assassinated in Moscow on April 12 2010. Eduard Chuvashov, who was shot on the way to work on Monday morning is suspected to have been killed by ultranationalists as revenge, after he jailed three skinheads last week for racially-motivated murders. The Moscow City Court judge has previously sentenced a gang of skinhead youths for similar crimes and also worked on cases involving Russian officials accused of corruption and embezzlement. Sergei Mitrokhin, leader of LI Full Member YABLOKO, commented on the murder that took place in broad daylight in Moscow: “We think that this blatant murder of a federal judge who has been conducting the most resonant cases against nationalists and chauvinists represents a challenge both to the judiciary and the civil society… [it is an attempt] on behalf of nationalistic and fascist forces to frighten and split our multiethnic society over nationalistic issues.”

The second reading of the law on extremism took up half of the State Duma deputies' plenary session on June 20. Opponents kept warning: the notion of extremism was not clearly defined and this vagueness untied the hands of the Prosecutor General's Office and the Justice Ministry in their search for internal enemies. However, the State Duma supported the draft law initiated by the president as usual. The voting went as follows: 272 deputies (against a required number of 226) supported the law, whereas 126 rejected it. Consideration of the draft law started haphazardly before discussion of the first item - the notion of extremism - was closed. However, the deputies cleared everything out within two hours.

Sergei Mitrokhin, a member of the Yabloko faction, told reporters before the beginning of the State Duma's plenary session on Thursday where the parliamentarians were planning to consider in the second reading the presidential draft Law against Extremism.

Duma Gives Nod to Bill on Extremism

A controversial presidential bill on combating extremism was pushed through the State Duma by pro-Kremlin factions Thursday, despite criticism from the Communists, liberal lawmakers and human rights advocates, who say the measure will give the government too much power to suppress public protest.
