MOSCOW, May 24 [from RIA Novosti's Arina Dovgan]
- Russian-US summiteers have signed a strategic offensive armaments
reduction treaty. It came as a breakthrough for President Vladimir
Putin, considering that a mere six months ago the USA was refusing
to sign any documents at all, says Grigory Yavlinsky, prominent
Russian politician and leader of Yabloko, a major reformist parliamentary
group.
He pointed out two documents in the package signed at the summit.
The strategic partnership declaration matters more than any other
paper as a step forward in bilateral relations.
The strategic offensive armaments reduction treaty comes next
in importance. It does not bind Russia but provides the basis
for an updated mutual understanding in the security sphere, said
Mr. Yavlinsky.
The two countries will now launch a defence partnership to involve
the Russian military-industrial complex and greatly extend job
opportunities, remarked the MP as he went over the strategic consequences
expected from the summit documents.
