The society of the protection of human rights, Memorial,
declared its support for the draft peaceful settlement
of the situation in Chechnya, proposed by Yabloko's leader
Grigory Yavlinsky. As noted in a letter forwarded by the
society's board to Grigory Yavlinsky, the proposals of
Yabloko's leader are "in general reasonable and constructive".
"We realise that in a situation, where there is
total reliance on force and negligence of the law, your
declaration required civil courage and political honesty."
This is stated in a letter from Memorial's leadership.
Its authors assured Yabloko's leader that he "can
always count on Memorial's support in all areas related
to the protection of human rights, fundamental humanitarian
and democratic values."
"The document also contained criticism of Anatoli
Chubais, a leader of the "Union of the Right Forces"
who, as indicated in the letter, accused Yavlinsky of
"stabbing the Russian army in the back" with
his plan and then called Yabloko's leader a "traitor".
According to the leaders of the Memorial, the position
of Anatoli Chubais "demonstrates deep moral degradation
of the state and a political figure who had previously
declared his adherence to democratic values and humanitarian
ideals".
