MOSCOW. May 21 (Interfax) - Russian human rights commissioner
Vladimir Lukin has called on
the country's authorities to abide by a ruling issued by the European Court
of Human Rights requiring Russia to pay Vladimir Gusinsky, former owner
of NTV television, 88,000 euros as compensation for his court expenses.
"We should treat the European court's ruling simply: the European
court has issued this ruling and we need to carry it out," Lukin
said at a news conference in the Interfax main office on Friday.
"This is a qualified court, and its decision most likely points
to the fact that our judicial agencies' actions were unqualified,"
he said.
"Our courts should work better" if Russia wants international
judicial agencies to rule in its favor in similar cases.
"Of course, nobody is immune to mistakes, neither domestic courts
nor European courts. But the European court has made a large number of
decisions, including on Russia, and some of these rulings have been highly
appropriate," the human rights commissioner said.
The European Court of Human Rights on Wednesday found that Russia had
violated Gusinsky's human rights and ordered it to pay compensation for
his court expenses.
