The Institute of regional ombudsmen should be strong and
well developed to reach every corner of the country and efficiently protect
human rights. This opinion was expressed on Friday by ombudsman Vladimir
Lukin after his election.
Vladimir Lukin noted that at the beginning of his work in the post he
would like to learn more about how human rights protection is organised
in Russia. He also stressed that in his opinion the "most acute and
glaring problems" concern violation of the rights of children, problems
of pensioners and the disabled, as well as problems connected with female
unemployment. In addition the ombudsman said that he would focus his efforts
on the fight against "the terrible trade in human beings".
Lukin also said that special attention should be paid to the Council
under the Ombudsman which should play a considerable role in the activites
of human rights organisations. Lukin suggested that his predecessors at
the post would also participate in the work of the Council.
Lukin also noted that he would not be quitting the YABLOKO party. At
the same time he said that in compliance with the law he had to suspend
his party membership for the term of his office in the post of ombudsman.
