The country's top liberal parties, Yabloko and the Union of Right
Forces, or SPS, will not run together in upcoming parliamentary elections,
an SPS leader said Wednesday.
"There will be no union. SPS and Yabloko will take part in elections
separately," Irina Khakamada told Ekho Moskvy radio.
Yabloko leader Grigory Yavlinsky called off a Wednesday meeting where
the two parties were to discuss the possible union, saying Yabloko could not
accept SPS's terms.
SPS offered to back Yavlinsky in the 2004 presidential race, while SPS
leader Boris Nemtsov would head the liberal bloc in December's Duma
elections.
Nemtsov said top Yukos officials tried, "as major donors to liberal
political parties," to help forge the coalition but failed, UFG reported.
