Moscow, January 11. 2003 (MK-Novosti). The results of the contest "Politician of the Year for Education" have been announced. Experts from "Uchitelskaya Gazeta" newspaper ("Teachers' Newspaper") called Chairman of the State Duma Committee for Education and Science Alexander Shishlov (the YABLOKO faction) "the politician of the year 2002". This information comes from the press-service of the YABLOKO faction. The competitors of Alexander Shishlov were Oleg Smolin, Valentina Matviyenko and even Vladimir Putin.
According to the experts in education, Alexander Shishlov, unlike his predecessor as Chairman of the profile committee of the Duma communist Ivan Melnikov, is closer to reformers, although this does not have an impact on his principled position often differing form the opinion of the government. The recent example is the draft concept of the reform for wages of the budget sphere workers developed by the Ministry of Labour and sharply criticized by the Committee.
The experts also called "the event of the year" the adoption in the first reading of the draft law "On the State Standard of Comprehensive Education" and the "scandal of the year" an attempt to abolish privileges for village teachers, as well as the vote by the Unity and Fatherland-All Russia parties against an increase in budget expenditures on education.
