Moscow. NEZAVISIMAYA GAZETA ( MOSCOW ). On December 23
the Union of Right-Wing Forces (SPS) and YABLOKO presented their new joint
project - a Joint Democratic Council. This inter-party structure, which
includes six delegates from each party, was presented by Boris Nadezhdin
(SPS) and Sergei Mitrokhin
(YABLOKO). The Council held its first meeting yesterday focussing on procedural
issues. The Council will spend a number of weeks to work out the main issues
regarding its "political revival". "The idea of SPS and
YABLOKO in all spheres are rather different, which will make the negotiations
difficult," expects Mr Nadezhdin. The primary task of the Joint Council
was to choose a single candidate to run for RF President from the democratic
forces. Now this task is not in the agenda. In the words of Mr Nadezhdin,
it turned to be extremely difficult to find an independent, opposition
candidate, and there is no point in continuing the search - there is no
time. YABLOKO officials were disappointed with the idea of a single candidate
before the partners, and now both parties have to look for new spheres
of application of the democratic council.
