MOSCOW, December 21 (Itar-Tass) - The Yabloko Party will
not back Vladimir Putin at the presidential elections. This amendment was
specially included on Sunday in the text of a
decision where the Yabloko congress confirmed that the party would not
be participating in the forthcoming presidential elections scheduled for
March 2004.
When debating the results of the election campaign to the State Duma, the
congress referred in their decision to the "lack of free and democratic
elections in Russia". "Unlimited use of administrative resources
and mass falsification in ballot counting turned the elections into a farce,"
the document states. In this situation, the document continues, the forthcoming
presidential elections "cannot be free, honest, just or equal".
The congress did not rule out the possibility that the party would call
on its supporters during the presidential campaign to vote against all
candidates. However, the document stresses, it would be premature to take
such a decision now, as so far no candidates have officially been registered
