MOSCOW, November 28 (Itar-Tass) -- The ratification of
the multilateral nuclear environmental programme at the State Duma is "a
serious step forward in the resolution of the problem of nuclear waste
disposal in Russia," President Vladimir Putin said at a Friday conference
on nuclear security.
He said the programme concentrates on the Soviet-made submarines based
in the country's northwest.
"Contracts worth of $100 million have been signed with foreign
partners. Naturally, Russia thinks it is a national task, and we have
assigned the resources we could muster. In all 2 billion rubles were assigned
for the goal this year," Putin said.
"We also worked on other aspects of the problem. For instance,
the Nuclear Power Ministry disposed of radioactive ground and waste from
the Kurchatov Institute in 2002-2003. I know that Grigory
Yavlinsky and his Yabloko colleagues worked on that problem and raised
the question of the Kurchatov Institute more than once. The work is now
accomplished. Another important aspect is the energy contract in the Chelyabinsk
region," Putin said.
Nuclear Power Minister Alexander Rumyantsev, Deputy Chief Scientific
Secretary of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences and head
of the Radio-Chemistry Laboratory of the Vernadsky Institute of Geo-Chemistry
and Analytical Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences Boris Myasoyedov,
Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and President
of the Center of Ecological Policy Alexander Yablokov, Yabloko leader
Grigory Yavlinsky and Duma deputy from the Yabloko faction Sergei
Mitrokhin attended the meeting.
