The protagonist of one of our publications Dima
Goryashin entered this year one of the most prestigious faculties
of the Moscow State University - the Faculty of Mechanics and
Mathematics. He passed examinations with the bulk of applicants,
even though he could have assumed privileges as an orphan. He
did not require them, as Dima is a talented mathematician.
We wrote how Dima hoped that generous people would respond and
help him simply study without having to simultaneously combine
higher mathematics with the professions of lifter or salesman
in a small shop.
The first response to our publication came from the Moscow regional
branch of the YABLOKO party. Dima will receive a grant from YABLOKO
for five years.
A little later we learned that our publication had helped Dima's
tutors receive a grant for Dima from the Governor of Belgorod
Region; however it would be wrong to use the word "receive"
here. Simply Governor Savchenko as a patriot in his region likes
to be proud of his compatriots. Dima also represents his hopes.
Novaya Gazeta also received a letter from Prof. Igor Yefimov
who now lives in Cleveland, the USA. It is difficult to call Igor
a FOREIGN scientist. He worries about Russian science and tries
to build "bridges".
Igor wrote, "I am ready to pay Dima a grant from my own
pocket. Tens of thousands of Russian scientists now live in the
West. They can and want to help Russian students. It would be
great if your paper could popularise such an idea..."
