On the creation of a monument to the victims of political repressions

September 26, 2002

When the Soviet totalitarian system collapsed at the end of 1980s, a number of outstanding figures in literature and art commented on the need to immortalise the memory of the victims of political terror in the Soviet Union by creating a monument. However, this idea was not implemented then for objective and subjective reasons.

Memorials to commemorate the victims of political repressions have been erected all over the country, including Moscow. Enthusiasts take care of these memorials and thereby perform work of great national significance. In accordance with this activity and with due account of reactionary trends in politics and irresponsible calls to erect monuments to executioners rather than victims of political terror, the Russian Democratic Party YABLOKO calls for a return to an important symbolic democratic initiative and erect in Moscow, the capital of our country, a large-scale monument to remember the millions of victims of political terror and repressions in Russia in the 20th century.

It would be right to erect such a monument at Lubyanka Square (Ed. the square in the centre of Moscow located between the KGB buildings and the location of the monument to Dzerzhinsky prior to its removal in 1991.). We are convinced that such an initiative would enjoy broad public support in our country, despite all difficulties and modern Russian History.

A corresponding official proposal has been submitted to the Mayor of Moscow (Ed. who spoke in favour of restoring Dzerzhinsky's statue at its former place), the Chairman of the Moscow City Duma and the Commission on Monumental Art.

The Russian Democratic Party YABLOKO

We think that monument to the victims of political repressions in Russia in the 20th century should be erected at Lubyanka square.
