St. Petersburg, August 28, 2001; 19:08:12. The head of the political
council of the Unity Alexander Mikhailushkin informed journalists
that today RPC Yabloko (the Russia’s Party of the Centre Yabloko)
plans to conduct a meeting of the political council where the
party will consider the address received from Unity in support
of the candidacy of Yuri Solonin at by-elections [to the State
Duma] in the 209th electoral district of St. Petersburg. According
to Mikhailushkin, preliminary negotiations with the leadership
of the RPC Yabloko provide all the grounds for assuming that Yabloko
will be satisfied with such a candidacy. A member of the political
council of the SPS Stanislav Yeremeyeev also shares the optimism
of the head of the Unity. He told journalists that SPS had conducted
negotiations with Yabloko and, consequently also hoped that Yabloko
would support a single candidate.
We would like to point out that there is also a Coordination
Council organised by Yabloko and the SPS, which also, as RBC was
informed by the Press Service of the SPS, planned to consider
the problem of a single candidate. However, there has been no
decision from Yabloko’s political council, which is only due tonight.
