Mayor of Minusinsk (a city in the Krasnoyarsk
Area) got drowned in the Podkamennaya Tunguska river on June
27. The circumstances of the accident showed that this accident
took place during committing of a crime [by the Mayor] – unlawful
fishing (fishing is prohibited in this part of the river until
winter due to sturgeon spawning).
This has become the third case (of those released to the
general public) of death of a top state official during poaching
since the beginning of 2009. The first was the accident with
Plenipotentiary of the President of Russia who died hunting
[mountain goats from a helicopter] in the Altai mountains,
the second was Governor of the Irkutsk region who died during
his hunt at the Lake Baikal area.
After the Altai tragedy thousands of Russian citizens asked
the President of Russia to give a moral assessment of such
behaviour of representatives of the authorities. However,
such assessment did not emerge neither that time, nor later
after the death of the Irkutsk Region Governor.
We think that Russia’s top leaders have to openly and firmly
condemn state officials’ poaching and adopt measures so that
to curb such permissiveness to systematic violation of environmental
protection laws by all the state servants.
