![]() The opinion that "the political calm" is coming to an end tuned out to be the dominating theme. Consequently the Council proposed that YABLOKO pay special attention to the deterioration in the social problems which intensified recently, the growing demand for protection of human rights and the statement that young people "have begun taking to the streets." At the same time the meeting expressed doubts that it is possible to create a successful left, and moreover a democratic alternative to the party of the power. It was noted that in this sense the task of the party is to maintain YABLOKO's identity. The participants of the meeting also stressed that recognition of the mistakes and crimes of the Yeltsin's decade as one of the main streams of the public opinion confirms that YABLOKO was right to criticise the authorities during that period and propose alternative solutions to the key issues of the Russian policies. For the first time the democratic community expressed the idea of a more careful, though closer interaction with the left-wing movement. Grigory Yavlinsky defined the margins of political interaction for YABLOKO: "Mafia is on the right and on the left there are those who are not ready to publicly abolish the Lenin-Stalin heritage, bolshevism, nationalism and xenophobia." The inner boundary are the "Kremlin puppets" that we are "see and feel," noted Yavlinsky. Trying to formulate the current task for YABLOKO the participants of the meeting concluded that in the present situation the universal task of any liberal-democratic force is to preserve the present Russian Constitution, which is even more important than success at the elections in 2007. | |||
