An even more terrible series of acts of terror may follow the retaliatory action of the US. Such an opinion was expressed by Deputy Head of the Duma Defence Committee and member of the Yabloko faction Alexei Arbatov at press conference in the RIA-Novosti agency on September 18, 2001.

According to Arbatov, “there is no doubt that the barbaric acts in New York and Washington were thoroughly conceived and prepared in advance.” Arbatov also said that “the organisers of these acts knew very well that the USA would respond by carrying out a powerful strike involving the most modern methods”.

Therefore, according to Arbatov, “it is quite logical to suppose that the terrorists have also a developed the next stage of their devilish operation.” This means that in response to the US strikes the terrorists will undertake a range of actions. “And these actions will be even more horrible than during the first stage,” said Arbatov.

He also expressed doubts that the USA “has adopted ample safety measures to secure themselves and their allies at the next stage of escalation”.
