Grigory Yavlinsky continues to insist on convening a Democratic Assembly of Russia
13.12.2000 |
The leader of Yabloko Grigory Yavlinsky considers it necessary to convene the Democratic Assembly of Russia, involving all the democratic forces of Russia. Grigory Yavlinsky proposes to transform this assembly into a permanent body that would meet once every quarter. Grigory Yavlinsky believes that the main task of the democrats today is to protect the Constitution, which the authorities will in his view “adapt to meet the needs of a controlled democracy.” Grigory Yavlinsky also drew attention to considerable growth in Yabloko party members in recent months. “The party thinks that the time and developments in the country are gradually increasing the number of people concerned about protection of human rights. These issues represent the backbone of Yabloko’s policy,” stressed Grigory Yavlinsky in an interview with “Obschaya Gazeta”. According to Yavlinsky’s data, the number of Yabloko party members has increased by 40% over the past seven months. “Increasingly more people from different social groups are joining us,” noted Yavlinsky. He also expressed his conviction that when the party strengthens, its support will considerably exceed the 7% of votes that it obtained during the past elections to the State Duma. Speaking about the relationship with the Union of Right-Wing Forces (SPS), Yavlinsky noted that “the majority in Yabloko considers the coalition with the SPS as a coalition of two strong parties”. According to Grigory Yavlinsky, “this is the result of all our discussions, including those at the past congress” of Yabloko. Based on Interfax reports.
