The leader of the Yabloko association, Grigory Yavlinsky,
advocates a revision of the Soviet-American anti-missile
defence treaty (signed in 1972) and the creation of a joint
Russian-European anti-missile defence.
In an interview with journalists on January 31, 2000,
Grigory Yavlinsky said that "Russia should create together
with Europe a limited anti-missile defence system with a
potential of up to one hundred missiles".
"The USA need such an umbrella, and the Americans put
forward this question. But we, Russia and Europe, also need
such an umbrella," noted Grigory Yavlinsky. He also indicated
that we could be talking here about the creation of a joint
anti-missile system, based on Russian technologies. Speaking
about the Reduction in Aggressive Weapons - 2 Treaty, Grigory
Yavlinsky confirmed the steadfast principled position of
the Yabloko faction that will support ratification of this
treaty in the State Duma.
